Why do I teach? I teach singing to instil a love of music in the hearts of students young and old. Whilst
having voice lessons, each student learns to love his or her unique voice and gains the ability to use it
as a tool for artistic expression.
If this isn’t enough, it’s been proven that students gain even more from a musical education than those
not exposed to music. They develop valuable skills related to fields outside of the performing arts; these
include self-esteem, diligence, perseverance and a strong work ethic. My responsibility as a teacher is to
help each student achieve his or her full potential as a singer, musician, and person.
My teaching guides students in the refinement of an individual sound and healthy, consistent technique. In order to
achieve these goals, I help each student develop individualized strategies, which improve technical mastery, and, thus, artistic expression.
Such strategies include personalised vocal exercises to target vocal shortcomings, honest and caring feedback, technically guided repertoire, and carefully developed practice.
Each student learns differently. Therefore, I tailor lessons and cater my teaching strategies to individual learning styles. For example, I present technical ideas physically, audibly, and kinesthetically. This way each student develops a personalized vocal language to apply during practice.
Each singer IS his or her own instrument. Therefore, singing is not only extremely difficult to master but also an extremely personal, and consequently, vulnerable activity. It is my role to be sensitive to these vulnerabilities and to become a trusted mentor, technician, and adviser. A sense of trust and respect fosters great results and allows students to feel comfortable in the studio.
I hope each student develops a sense of confidence in my studio - confidence in their own singing ability but also, more broadly, confidence in themselves. Each student must use vocal technique to develop a “toolbox” of vocal solutions. As time goes on, I hope students are able to apply these tools independently and with great aptitude. My ultimate objective is to help students develop these strategies to fulfil individual goals as a musician, then allow them to thrive independently with composure and determination.
